Gym Business Philosophy - a few points I believe in 💡 💪🏽Having an understanding of training is essential. It’s tempting as a gym business grows to step away from training. Both of yourself, and of clients. Staying directly connected to creating results, both personally and with clients, makes for better decisions, better relationships, and clearer perspective for what matters most. 🏋🏻Equipment should be selected with member results in mind. Trends change quickly. Effective training principles evolve slowly. We believe in providing equipment based on the evolution of effective training not the latest trends. 🏆Culture trumps rules. Rules are marginally effective. They’re necessary but they are not a substitute for a facility’s culture. Racking your weights is a rule enforced by paid staff, respect for the training environment is a cultural belief enforced by the entire facility ⚒A niche should also be defined by personal character traits not only by demographics. Members that take their workout serious is a niche. Females with a college degree age 30-39 is a demographic, and in any demographic there are hard workers and lazy bones. All demographics find unity and common ground if they share the same work ethic and dedication. 📸: @mikelam_
Stay on track! 🗓 It’s November - Over a decade working with gym members and personal clients has shown me first hand that this time of year is tough to stay on track with your fitness goals. A few words of encouragement heading into November and December ⚒You’re in control of this! You cant control COVID, you can’t control the election, but you can control your daily actions. The physical and mental advantages to being fit and healthy are too many to count! Each day - get your exercise, make healthy food choices, drink enough water and get proper sleep. Check those boxes day after day. 🦃Indulge for a night or two, not a month or two. 🙋🏻♂️Show up! Year after year our average check-in per member declines this time of year. Keep showing up! Find a workout partner that will help hold you accountable, talk to a trainer and establish a goal, join classes if you’re not making it in your own, schedule time to learn something new related to your fitness goals. 🙅🏼♀️Drop the all or nothing mentality. If you miss a day, make it up. If you blow your diet, quickly forgive yourself and move on. Make the next best choice. 🏋🏻Lead by example! Statistics tell us your family and friends will skip the gym and gain weight the next two months. Take on a leadership role! First and foremost lead by example. Beyond that offer them encouragement, information and accountability! If you’re giving them a fitness related gift - maybe give it to them early and check in that they’re using it! 📝If you must downshift, have a plan! Gifts cost money, family gatherings take time. I understand. But make plans for this. Maybe this is the year you start setting the alarm and hitting early workouts. If evenings are too busy learn how effectively workout in 30 minutes so you can workout on your lunch break. We will be doing what we can at Hidden Gym to motivate, encourage and educate our community through this holiday season. The only day we close each year is Christmas. 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 Dave Tate has talked a lot about earning your regrets. Dave’s philosophy on this says to have “no regrets” is bull shit, we all have them, but we each need to earn our own. I can’t have Dave’s regrets, you can’t have mine, we each earn our own and pass those lessons along to those we influence. I purchased this shirt at a time I was struggling with lots of regret, regrets I still battle to this day, but I hold it in a much healthier light now. With the perspective Dave talks about on the subject, regrets become something to be proud of. A hard-earned lesson that will shape your future and the future of those around you. A few of my regrets ▪️Not holding enough confidence in my own vision and calling ▪️Ignoring the advice of friends who had my best interest in mind. Advice that was probably uncomfortable for them to give me, in hindsight I really appreciate what they were trying to do and at the time I remember being offended. ▪️Assuming someone’s level of success made then smarter, wiser or a more fit leader ▪️Willfully quieting my voice and passing on opportunities to grow my voice While there are a list of regrets, I constantly work to view them with gratitude, thankful for the lessons learned. The bible often uses the analogy of refining precious metals. It takes lot of heat to boil out impurities and to get pure gold or silver. Much like it take lots of heat (failures, regrets) to get us to a better and strong version of ourselves. Push hard towards the goals you believe in. Mistakes will be made, lessons learned, but that’s the best part of the journey. 📷: @mikelam_

This is my #BookTrip story, in support of @readers2leaders and #NTxGivingDay I was gifted this book, 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, in 2011 by my friend Jason Kos. It's one of my favorites to this day and has been instrumental in my "trip" to this point - owning my 3rd Gym in 10 years. 🔑 My key takeaway from this book is watching for key language and signs among members in your "Tribe" to identify which level they're on, and how to coach and grow them up to new levels. It's an excellent book about leading a company and a community. Several years after studying this book I was reading "Eleven Rings" by Phil Jackson and he references this book often. 🏆 As many of you know I'm passionate about reading, which is why I support R2L as a volunteer and board member. 📚 R2L focuses on improving literacy in children who are behind in school in low economic areas. This is one of my recent favorite conditioning workouts for myself and clients! 𝗦𝗸𝗶 𝗘𝗿𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟭𝟬-𝟮𝟬 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬-𝟰𝟬 𝘆𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀. Here's the details and suggestions in case you have limited equipment. For the Ski Erg dial up the resistance based on your strength and endurance. We like a high resistance and are aiming for an 80%+ of max effort for 20-30 seconds. Reach high at the top of the stroke, then using your legs and body weight drive down with POWER. Use the full range of motion to smash these out. If you don't have a Ski Erg, a med ball slam is a good alternative. Don't have a med ball either - go for 15 burpees. Load up some weight on the farmer's carry! We worked up to 3 plates per side of the Prime Trap Bar. Start with no straps and carry the bar 10-20 yards down, make a 180 degree turn, and bring it back. Using the turn and bringing it back to the starting position helps your partner superset easily. Time your work period, and rest 3 - 4 times as long as it takes to complete the round to ensure you can bring maximal intensity and effort to the next round. Focus on proper breathing between sets. Complete 6-10 rounds! "If you go up, you will never be held back" Last week Tony invited me to join him at @keithcraft ‘s mastermind group. It was a great experience talking to local business owners and learning from Keith. Tony did an incredible job presenting the vision and plans for @tmackelitetraining and got some very valuable feedback. Tony's story was so impactful he was invited to share it infront of the @elevate.life this past sunday! Tony tells his story of rising through the boxing ranks and his career ending injury that resulted in his early entry into entrepreneurship. Also his life story of growing up in Pleasant Grove - moving to Plano and later becoming the first black Homecoming King and Class President at Plano West. It's an incredible story and we are blessed to have Tony and his business at @hidden_gym and all grow together
Happy Retirement Day Dad! 36 years as a State Farm agent and today was the last day. Very proud of Dad! I’m happy for him for finishing a successful career and that he is in a good chapter of life right now. I’m so thankful for the years of hard work he put in and what his career and work provided for our family. I’ve learned so much from my Dad as a business owner - both through his teaching and by observation of the habits that made him successful. Congratulations Dad!
𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻: 4 weeks out vs. 4 days out (sleepy pics 😴) ▪️Physique A is a sustainable look, it’s by no means easy to attain, but once you get there it’s livable. ▪️Physique B isn’t sustainable (unless you’re naturally very lean - I am not lol). It’s uncomfortable and while it’s a look I enjoy, I’m always ready to gain some weight back ▪️Physique B is the lightest I’ll weigh all year. It appears “Bigger” but is the physically smallest I ever get. ▪️With Physique A “Good” body parts are lean, but problem areas are the focus (low back, lower abs, glutes and hams). Physique B all areas are lean, good parts have most “pop” ▪️In physique A training is at top intensity pushing toward physique B. In physique B training has pulled back some in intensity, as you let body recover to achieve a peak look ▪️In physique A cardio is full speed. Still using HIIT methods, and driving full force to remove problem areas. In physique B cardio is slightly lowered. HIIT has been removed. Trying to allow legs to recover so they aren’t as watery and show full separation ▪️Energy levels in physique A are still pretty high, energy level in physique B is low most of the day.

𝗩𝟬𝟮 𝗠𝗮𝘅 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴! Today I did my first ever Vo2 Max Test. I learned so much! I recently became a Certified Conditioning coach, and it's been a big step in the right direction for me as a Body. Builder. (meaning someone who builds their body for different goals) Many of you might not know but I took a break from competing as a on stage bodybuilder from 2014-2017 and I did some triathlon racing. Learning to balance strength and endurance was a great experience. Now back to competing I'm on a path to learn as much as I can about conditioning and how to improve as a healthy, high performing competitor. Some things you learn from this test Vo2 Max 🚴🏼♂️ a baseline of aerobic fitness and how well your body uses oxygen Exact HR Zones ❤️ custom numbers about my own zones for fat burning, carbohydrate burning and performance Anaerobic Threshold 💪🏽 when my body switches from an aerobic state to a fully anaerobic state, a very important number to know! Vo2 Max 🌅 has been recently linked directly to life expectancy and cardiovascular health, I'd like to stick around a while Improved aerobic fitness 💙 has many benefits even to bodybuilders - being well rounded is important to achieve your best What gets measured, gets improved. 📈 True in sports, business, and all walks of life. But one of the many things I love about being in the gym is its neutrality and consistency. The gym doesn't judge, it doesn't have an opinion of you. The gym doesn't hold a grudge. It's just you vs. a static opponent. A consistent measuring stick of what you're made of. It doesn't vote, or have an agenda. It's going to be the same whether it's your best day or your worst. 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘀 summed it quite simply to wrap up his famous essay Iron and Soul, "𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝙡𝙗𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝙡𝙗𝙨." ⚖️ 📷: @mikelam_

Wow what a weekend!! Bodybuilding is a special sport to me and something I feel privileged to have been pursuing since a young teenager. At 33 years old, it's awesome to still be able to make improvements year after year and hitting an all-time best at something you've been working at this long is extremely gratifying!! I was able to win the Light Heavyweight Open Bodybuilding Class which was awesome, and compete in the best Overall Bodybuilding Line Up I have ever been a part of. I have a big respect for the level of competition that was here, and thought it was a great representation of how strong our bodybuilding scene is here in Texas, and in the Dallas area! Bodybuilding is a one man sport by definition but like anything to be good at something requires the input and help from a lot of people, and I have no shortage of amazing people in my corner. I won't put it all in this post, but in short I'm extremely grateful for all of you! This was a unique event given the COVID regulations and how the promoters adapted to pull together an awesome event with nearly 500 competitors! Here are some fun photos from the weekend! Importance of a 5 Star Training Environment: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ There's a LOT that goes into what I would consider a 5 star training environment. The most basic ingredient being the right tools for the task at hand. 🛠 Something less tangible but equally important is the realization of what is possible by seeing it happen. 👀 One of my favorite things about [Hidden Gym] is that it constantly reminds me what is possible, and stretches my ideas about what I'm capable of. 💪🏽 An example: I often do morning cardio at a commercial gym by my house. I see guys working hard in the weight room but the training loads are what I would consider to be light and far under their potential. I honestly don't think they have the slightest clue of what they're capable of. Not because they're ignorant, or because they don't work hard, but they never see anyone do more. One of the important factors of a 5 star training environment is that it will challenge you to realize what's possible for yourself. If you are constantly seeing people lift more, or lift smarter, gaining an edge through new techniques, run longer, punch more accurately.. It will rub off on you. 👊🏼 I'm talking: Healthy comparison. belief through visualization. healthy competition. humbling experiences. learning through seeing. It’s important to pause take time to celebrate milestones. 🏆 Very proud of the full-time @hidden_gym staff for a recent job well done. We took some time to reflect on things we are grateful for and list off some of our biggest wins as a team. 🙏🏼 More than a year and a half ago we talked a lot about one of my favorite books 📚 “The Score Takes Care of Itself” by late great NFL Coach Bill Walsh 🏈 . That if we focus on process, and doing the little things right day in and day out, then the scoreboard will read positively. We still have plenty to work on but this philosophy is serving us well.

They are goal oriented, they’re there to get uncomfortable and find personal growth. You won’t find that at a bar, mall, movie theater or restaurant. You are who you spend time with. I think a regular of audit of who gets your time is good practice. But in a general sense, being at the gym is being in good company that will enhance your own growth. Bicep work 💪🏽 today was an upper-back and bicep day. Here are a couple of clips from bicep training - we did some slow tempo, very controlled incline curls and forced negatives on the preacher curl. Two tough techniques but worth incorporating into your next arm session. @stevekuclo knows a thing or two about building big arms 💪🏽
Strongman Cardio for Bodybuilding This is a “fun” method we’ve been utilizing in our training group. Awesome day at the track! First day back on the bike in a while, man did I miss it! It’s down right fun, and it’s such a recharge for me. Nothing clears your mind like speed - there’s no time for thoughts outside of what you’re doing. “What’s the line, where’s my turn in, where’s my braking point, last lap I was wide on the exit..” just pure concentration and your everyday thoughts and worries are now where to be found. Team Heavy HIIT’R 🏆 Kicking off another week away from the gym. 😐 It's been awesome to see everyone getting creative with their training, building home gyms and finding alternative solutions to the gym. I'd be lying if the thought never crossed my mind 🤔 - "what if people just want to continue to train at home when this is all over?" But I don't think I've ever felt more reinforced about the value the gym adds to people's life. 💪🏽Access to good equipment in a clean and motivating environment is awesome - but I've said it many times over the years. Good gym's are so much more than 4 walls and equipment. A good gym is built by the people in it, the culture of the gym, and the community connected to it. 🏆There's a transfer of energy, information, motivation, and discipline that happens among the people that share the space - and it's not something that can be recreated over video conferences, app or garage. Potential Energy ⚡️This is the energy we build within us, saved for a later date. If I could relate to a mindset right now as an athlete, this is it. If I learned much about physical goals or any goal for that matter it’s that I must embrace seasons. You can’t twist the throttle wide open all the time. As many of you can relate to right now, I had big goals this year. I was lining things up to be on stage this summer, to hit new milestones in my business and add some stamps to my passport. Now athletically I’m back to creating potential energy - when it’s time to start a contest prep, what can I do now to make sure I’m ready. Here are my key areas of focus: 🔑 body fat is within a 12 week striking distance 🔑 metabolism is firing on all cylinders - high intake from clean foods, HIIT training 2x week 🔑 body is rested and prepared to push - using heavy weights but keeping frequency low 🔑 mentally prepared 🔑 reduce risk of injury by staying on top of mobility work 🔑 internally healthy- immune system is in solid shape and body ready for the rigors of prep. 📷: @mikelam_

20 Years of Training! 💪🏽I just realized this year marks 20 years since I got my first gym membership and fell in love with training. I remember it vividly because the local rec center required members to be 14, and I was only 13 at the time. My Dad fudged my birth date and we started hitting the iron on a regular basis. I did most everything completely wrong, but I loved it. I would bench press, do arms, and abs every day haha.. 20 years later and it's still the best part of my day. The gym's have changed, the people have changed, I've changed, but like Henry Rollins said "200 pounds is always 200 pounds". Maybe year 20 is when I can finally hit 20 inch arms?! I will definitely be putting my best into a contest this summer, and this milestone gives it some extra meaning.

A great time this afternoon at @readers2leaders Fitness Days! Couldn’t ask for a better group of fitness ambassadors to put these young kids through a workout, talk about the importance of exercise and lead by example! We do these days for two main reasons 1️⃣ it is one more opportunity for this kids to get a daily dose of exercise 2️⃣the evidence of exercise’s effect on the mind is indisputable and the movement helps the learning process 🧠 💪🏽 The mission at R2L is brilliantly simple - if there’s one thing we can address to give kids their best chance at success it’s literacy. Strength Based Cardio full training video via @mansports link in bio! 💪🏽🚨 MAN sports recently caught @goatsmilk33 and I at @hidden_gym for some strength based cardio training. This particular workout consisted of 🔟 rounds: 15 yard heavy sled pull, 15 yards heavy sand bag carry. We then rest roughly 5 minutes then attempted 🔟 rounds of: 15 yard sled rope row, 15 yard sled sprint. Round 10 of yesterday’s interval session! 💀I’ve been hitting this type of training 2x week for the past 5 weeks with @goatsmilk33 and really enjoying the challenge and benefits. My resting HR has dropped considerably, my endurance during weight training is WAY up, and I’ve gotten a bit leaner. This was a 1:1 work to rest ratio. ⚒Roughly 30 seconds all out, 30 seconds rest. The weight vest makes recovery a challenge because of the weight on your chest. Slide over to check out the heart rate graph, you can see on the last few rounds my heart rate never dipped below 90% of max. ❤️ Heavy sled pull x 10 yards, Heavy Sand Bag Carry x 10 yards. Tag in partner, repeat for 10 rounds. 5 minute break then we did 5 rounds of 20 seconds on, 20 seconds off on the echo bike. 🔥🔥

Why I personally love competing! 🏆Did I miss anything that you love about competing? ▪️It gives my training a purpose. Without competing I find it hard to really push myself to the max. ▪️Discipline is one of my strong suits, so I like that success in bodybuilding comes more from discipline than great performances. ▪️It's extreme. I've learned a lot about goal setting, and staying on a timeline from competing. To be a good competitor requires 24 hour per day focus for a set period of time. ▪️I love the process. I have so much fun playing with all the variables of diet, training, supplementation, and cardio to create results in your own body. ▪️It's self reliant. Many people play a part in helping, but at the end of the day you have to do the training, do the cardio and survive the diet. It's all on your shoulders, and I like that. ▪️I enjoy the carry over benefits of success. I enjoy looking fit in day to day life. ▪️It forces you to work smarter not harder. You have to learn balance, you can't just train like crazy and starve yourself. To be good you really have to learn when to use the gas and the brakes. ▪️It is seasonal.
