Today was Day 2 of Oct yoga calender and I learned 2 new poses today - Half warrior and a gate pose variation. The first pic is obviously the very graceful Crescent lunge. Day 23 & 25 Oopsy I miss a day... Shine on the Move 2020 Half circle pose or Gate pose (Parighasana) CobraPose (Bhujangasana) Stretches adductor muscle, calves and hamstrings. Parighasana makes your body lightens and energizes your whole body. Gate pose stretches intercostal muscles between ribs. Intercostal muscles help in breathing. Opens your shoulders and chest; and also stretches muscles in torso. Beneficial for your lungs and abdomen organs. Parighasana is also helpful in problems like allergies, cold, flu. Half circle pose, Parighasana. Backbends are the way to go to open up and expand. To uplift your energy and become wide in your heart space, anahata chakra. I love this pose because I feel so much more spacious afterwards. My heart has more space in the middle of the chest. There is more room for love, joy and trust in life. Have a lovely Sunday

The benefits of a morning practice, however long or short, are numerous. It’s your space to unravel any tightness in your body. I always work in some chest openers to open up the thoracic spine - so important if you spend a lot of the day sitting. Move intuitively and you’ll find where you need to create space, and if you’re not sure of what to do, pop a question in the comments and I’ll be happy to help!

Me and the cat had a lovely yoga flow session this evening!! It’s always fun when Scampi gets involved 😹 🌟 This is gate pose -> half circle pose. I love flowing between familiar postures- you can really focus on your breath. Tonight I really needed a relaxing stretch- I had another afternoon at work after 4 months off so my mind was a bit over-active! Ujjayi breath helped to settle it and the gentle movement helped me to keep my focus...even if Scampi almost knocked me over 😜! 🌟 The track is from Birdy (@birdyinstagram) ‘Keeping your head up’. Yoga pose: Half circle pose, ardha mandalasana. Pyjamas: Green floral pyjamas from @primark —————————————— I’m going to talk neuropathy today. Neuropathy is pain or a range of sensations caused by faulty signals from our nervous system. For me, it can take the form of numbness, burning sensations, pins and needles or a horrible crawling sensation (like there are little bugs on my legs 🥴!) * 90% of the stimulation and nutrition to our brains is generated by movement of the spine (according to Dr Roger Sperry...Actual medical science 😜). It makes sense that certain yoga poses might actually soothe the nervous system as we stretch out our spines. Enter, half circle pose! This is a fabulous way to lengthen out our spine (which so often gets bunched up from daily bad postures like slouching on the sofa, looking at our phones!). Try to create a long smooth line from the top of your fingers to the base of your foot. Breathe here and allow your body to settle into the pose. I love this modified half-circle pose! By placing my hand in front of my supporting knee, rather than to the side, and extending my top arm straight up instead of over, I am able to hold this beautiful long line of energy spanning fingertip to fingertip. Holding for 5-10 slow breath cycles, I am able to really open up and release. If I want to energize, I will add ‘threading the needle’ with my top arm in tune with my inhale and exhale. Extending and lengthening on each inhale and turning down inward as I thread my top arm between my mat and extended leg on my exhales. Follow it up with a nice long extended child’s pose and notice how you feel. Notice that on one side I am using a fist instead of flat hand, an easy modification if your wrist hurts or in my case, it eased pressure off my healing shoulder injury. #yoga #yogateacher #kidsyoga #yogafamily #familyyogalifestyle #igyogafam #halfcirclepose #modifiedyoga #yogaforall #yogaposes #yogastrength #heartopening #longlineofenergy

"Come, Universe," I invited. As I build more strength and begin to mobilise my spine again, it is tempting to reach out and up in all directions. This, ardha mandalasana, turned out to be an excellent alternative to parsvakonasana (extended side-angle pose), something I love doing and miss. Lateral bending of the spine is something that is not talked about all too much despite the many asanas involving it. Think parsvakonasana, reverse warrior. This movement is just as important as forward and backward bending, and can easily be missed in simplified practices like my current one. Without the strength to be able to hold a warrior 2 stance with a lateral bend for parsvakonasana, I decided to try this pose instead. The bent knee on the ground supports the weight well, and the palm in front of it can be placed at a distance that balances weight on the wrist, shoulder and core. It helps find a position of lesser effort on the muscles of the back while offering the same external side stretch that parsvakonasana does. If required, the palm on the ground can be placed on a block or draped over the seat of a chair to further reduce load on the spine. Day 18 #TYWCSpringClean is half circle. This pose will stretch out the obliques, opening the abdomen up for more efficient functioning. Check @ayurvedicyogi tomorrow for a more challenging variation that not only stretches the top oblique, but strengthens the bottom one! 🗝🗝Keys to the Pose🗝🗝 - Plant the extended leg's foot, and lift the arch! That little lift serves you so much in getting just that little bit more out of the stretch, and it's simple body awareness! - If the bottom hand is planted, push out of the shoulder socket, don't collapse into it. Keeping it simple on this sunny afternoon. :) I was playing around with Gate Pose during my lunchtime and stumbled on this flow, and I really like it. I could go deeper in some of these poses but decided not to today. Simplicity is difficult for me in regards to yoga poses; I want to push myself further and go deeper, but by doing that I can lose the intention of the pose. I've been finding sometimes I feel the stretch most when I'm "taking it easy" and then allow myself to stay there instead. #heropose #gatepose #halfcirclepose #camelpose #yoga #spring #nofilter
