✊🏿 Black History Month 2020 ✊🏿 - A year in which the lived experiences, challenges & triumphs of Black people across the world are being listened to, shared & creating change. ⠀ ⠀ Today's inspiration from Black History is Leymah Gbowee. An example of #blackgirlmagic, she is a noble peace prize winner for her outstanding work of leading a woman's peace movement that brought an end to the Second Liberian Civil War. ⠀ ⠀ Witnessing the effects of the first Liberian civil war in 1972 she became a trauma counsellor to treat child soldiers. But when the second civil war broke out in 1999 which brought systematic rape and brutality, Leymah was impelled to make a change. She mobilised Liberian woman to stage pray-ins and nonviolent protests demanding reconciliations and resuscitation of high-level peace talks. ✊🏿⠀ ⠀ ✊🏿 🔗 Find out more on our BHM page in our Linkin.bio!⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #upsu #plymouth #university #uni #plymuni #su #studentsunion #empower #support #advice #money #events #LeymahGbowee #2020 #freshers2020 #welcome #students #studentgroups #universityofplymouth #devon #firstyear #blackhistorymonth #education #bhm #community #internationalstudents #motivation #goals #blacklivesmatter

I’ve been a lot quieter on my social media lately because I’ve been working on an exciting project with some formidable women! On 31 October, we will be launching a new Network to support Black Women in their working lives. I’m so PROUD to introduce CounterCulture Network. I quote research all the time but let’s keep it real, anecdotally we know that black women have one of the most bumpiest rides when it comes to progressing to senior positions in the workplace. The experience is unique, at times emotional, often difficult, and regularly lonely. CounterCulture Network aims to create the space for black women to RESTORE, be EMPOWERED and ACHIEVE. We are building a culture of unashamed support as together we are stronger. Look us up! Link to our brand new website in my bio. More info on our launch coming soon! #SupportingBlackWomen #Empowerment #CounterCultureNetwork #Wellbeing #BlackWomensNetwork #MentalHealth #WorkplaceRacism #Equality #LetsTalkAboutSociety #BlackWomen #CelebrateBlackWomen #BHM #LetsTalkAboutRacism #BLM #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackLivesMatter #Racism #RacismInSociety #Inequality #Injustice #BlackVoices #WordsFromABlackWoman #Blog #FightingForChange #Unity #BlackAuthor #AntiRacism #Education

The Black British identity is a complex one. It means I've benefitted from a free UK education which has opened up doors for me all over the world. It means I have a purple passport so I can travel almost anywhere in the world without question. But it also means I have to ask many questions before I jump on a plane and land in another man's country because I don't know how I'll be perceived. It means at the airport, I can't find hair products which cater to me or makeup in my shade because they don't stock it. "Black people don't have the money to travel" apparently. It means people may mistake me for a prostitute or make assumptions about me until they hear me speak, that is. Then my English accent means I'm worthy of respect. #justbeinghonest #honesthelen #blacktravelsummit #blackhistoymonth #blackhistorymonthuk #blackhistory #blacklivesmatter #melanin #blackpride #blackexcellence

As crafters, it’s even more special to get that sale and know that somebody sees the value and appreciate just how much work goes into each products. #crochet #creativity⠀ ---⠀ As a black owned brand, we want to dedicate our posts this month to inspirational black figures that have excelled in the sports and creative industry. Going all the way back to the 1960s, we want to highlight the work created by Kwame Brathwaite, a fashion photographer that is well-known for his riveting message about black culture and freedom.⠀ ⠀ Brathwaite was the man who helped popularise the phrase “Black is beautiful”, capturing African American women embracing a new ideal of black female beauty in the civil rights era.⠀ ⠀ Till this day, his influence can be felt in music, politics and fashion, even inspiring Rihanna’s Fenty debut fashion line through his vintage photograph. In the wake of WWII, the UK faced severe labour shortages. They called for help from the Commonwealth countries. Born in Dominica, Asquith Camile Xavier journeyed to the UK at the age of 37 to begin work in a Britain weakened by years of conflict.  It is estimated that nearly half a million came from the Caribbean alone.  Asquith, although already an experienced guard, began working for British Railways, first as a porter in Paddington station then as a guard at Marylebone depot. In 1966, the line he was working on closed and he applied for a transfer and promotion to London Euston. His application was rejected as Euston were not accepting non-white applicants in customer-facing roles. On receiving this setback, Xavier began to campaign to overturn this "colour bar"  and end the racial discrimination in the sector. Although a practice rife in the employment sector, the Race Relations Act of 1965 was meant to outlaw and prevent it, however its reach did not extend to the railways. His demands were taken to Parliament and reached the Secretary for State Transport at that time.  As a result of his actions, in July 1966, British Railways announced the removal of the policy. Asquith began work at Euston in August 1966. He became the first non-white guard at the station. His tireless struggle led to the strengthening of the Race Relations Act in 1968. However, the story did not end there. There were many at the time who did not appreciate this victory over racial discrimination. Asquith was continually hounded by the public and received death threats. He had to be accompanied by police on his daily commute to and from his home in Kent to Euston. This constant stress is thought to have led to his untimely death at the age of 59. Of him, his granddaughter says, “His contribution to our society has undoubtedly shaped the way we live today and should be celebrated and never forgotten.” Asquith is considered a hidden figure in the struggle against racial injustice in the UK. A plaque commemorating him was unveiled in Chatham, Kent station in September 2020. A reminder of all those who fought relentlessly against racial injustice, faced resistance and also paid dearly.

DAY 12: It started off as a birthday celebration to mark Yvonne Ruddock’s 16th birthday at her Deptford home. Many of her friends came over to mark this occasion and everyone was enjoying the music, the atmosphere and each other’s company. Little did they know the night would end in tragedy. A fire broke out in the early hours of the morning while many Yvonne’s friends were still in her house. Everyone tried to escape. 13 people had died and another 27 people were injured whilst escaping the two-story building. Yvonne and her brother were one of the victims who had lost their lives. One of the survivors had committed suicide because he couldn’t deal with the the trauma of losing many of his friends in the fire. The media’s insensitive depiction of the fire, public indifference compounded by the police mishandling the case led to growing frustration and resentment amongst Lewisham residents and the Black community. More than 10,000 people took part in a protest denouncing alleged police incompetence six weeks after the New Cross fire. Later that year, a string of riots took place across Britain, including the 1981 Brixton riot (to be covered tomorrow). . . . #newcross #newcrossfire #lewisham #lewishamhistory #lewishamnews #brixton #brixtonriots #southlondon #BHM2020 #BHM #blackhistorymonth #blackhistorymonth2020

Yesterday, Lewis Hamilton equalled the all-time record for Grand Prixe wins set by Michael Schumacher with his 91st win yesterday. Well done, Lewis!!! After the race, Mick Schumacher, Michael's son presented Hamilton with an old helmet his dad wore in his final season of F1 in 2012.

Born in Awka, Nigeria in 1917, Dr Kenneth Dike has been referred to as ‘The Father of West African Historiography’. After gaining a History MA at the University of Aberdeen in 1947, Dike pursued a PhD with the History department at King’s College London. Working alongside Professor Vincent Harlow, in 1950, Dike submitted his ground-breaking thesis Trade and Politics in the Niger Delta, 1830-1879. Completion of a PhD at King’s College London positioned Dike as the first African to officially complete professional training in western historical scholarship. The success of his work saw Dike appointed to the history department at the University College Ibadan, becoming in 1956 the first African appointee to the position of Professor of History, the first African Principal in 1958 and when the College became a full-fledged University in 1960, Dike was made its first Vice-Chancellor, a position he occupied until 1966. The research has been carried out by Jacob Feltham Forbes, History undergraduate at King’s College London between 2017 and 2020 under the supervision of Dr Vincent Hiribarren. Any Black History programme that doesn't celebrate the Black queer community is incomplete. That's why today's #BlackTalent figure is Tanya Compas, @tanyacompas, a London-based youth worker & activist who creates spaces for Black queer youth - such as Exist Loudly @existloudly, 'creating spaces of joy & community for queer Black youth'. Compas has worked with young Londoners for most of her adult life, being named by Amnesty as 'one of the most inspiring women in the UK' in March 2018. During the lockdown, Compas raised over £100,000 in donations for her Exist Loudly Fund, which supports queer people of colour affected by the pandemic. Compas also created Queer Black Christmas, an event for queer Black people estranged from their family. “I grew up not knowing that black people could be queer, and believed that being LGBTQ+ was a ‘white people thing’. I don’t want other young people to think the same." #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackTalent #BlackInventors #LoveLondonMet #BHM #BlackHistory365 #BlackHistory #LoveSUs #HelloLondonMet *** London Met SU is celebrating #BlackTalent each and every day of our Black History 365 campaign. We'll celebrate globally-famous figures alongside up & coming Black figures, exploring the breadth of #BlackExcellence across art, politics, justice, history, science, medicine and more. Know of other talented Black figures? Tag us, them (if they're on IG) and let us know how they inspire you. Don't forget the #BlackTalent hashtag. In honour of Black History Month we are celebrating Michael Jordan with a special workout designed by our very own @dannymeadept The rep numbers were decided from: 23 for the iconic jersey number. 6 for the number of Championship Rings. 10 for the number of scoring titles he won. Members were wishing for a smaller jersey number by the end!
